9 Things Kids Today Will Never Know

9 things kids today will never know

Our little ones are “digital natives,” kids who have never known what it was like to live without digital electronics. And while we’re proud that our toddlers are born techies, it is a little strange to think that there are certain childhood experiences of ours they’ll never get to experience. Bedtime stories and crayons are pretty much forever. Dial tones and wooden playgrounds? Not so much.

Since we feel like looking back on simpler times, we’re taking a trip down memory lane and listing 9 toys, objects, and experiences your little one may not recognize.

Film cameras

It’s crazy to think that our little children may not recognize a camera in its traditional form. And we’re talking film, lenses – really old-school phones. But they’ve been replaced by our camera phones – not that that’s a bad thing. It helps us capture every moment!

Rotary phone toys

Remember when you used to play “phone”? It was so much fun turning the dial, pretending to make calls, hearing the bell ring. But now that rotary phones and landline are becoming phased out, your toddler might not know what to do with it!

And speaking of phones…

What “hang up” means

Now that smartphones are ubiquitous, our little one won’t understand that the phrase “hang up” used to be literal, when dial tone phones were secured to the wall!

Floppy disks

Honestly, when was the last time YOU ever used these? Floppy disks are so outdated that your little one may never know them other than the “save” symbol on their smart devices. But it’s good to remember that floppy disks used to be the go-to data storage device, able to hold onto a whopping 1.4 Mb of data.

VHS

When we were kids, everyone had THE VHS that we watched and rewinded so many times the tape was pretty much ruined, and we also all experienced the collective nightmare of taping over a cherished memory! The only similar experience is if your kid’s favorite show leaves your go-to streaming service!

Fisher-Price tape recorder

Remember this magical toy? It seemed like EVERY kid had this plastic, multi-colored boombox with a microphone attached. Of course, toddlers and kids today have no idea what a boombox is, let alone the cassette tape used to record their voices! And why should they? There’s an app for that!

Toy stores

Giant retailers focused entirely on children’s stores are slowly disappearing. Maybe it’s because more parents are focusing on enriching activities to entertain their kids, also, GI Joes are no match the allure of tablets and smartphones.

Saturday morning cartoons

At this point, streaming services have made it TOO easy for your little one to have Paw Patrol or Peppa Pig on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But when we were kids, there was the coveted Saturday morning cartoons phase was when we woke nice and early, cranked up the TV and plopped on the couch to watch hours of Scooby-Doo and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Prizes in the cereal box

While sugary cereal is slowly on the outs, prizes in cereal boxes are pretty much gone – and for good reason. That being said, we understand if you miss the clunk of a lightsaber spoon hitting your bowl for breakfast!

Those were some seriously good times, but let’s face it: being a kid today is super cool.
