Our Favorite Healthy Toddler Snacks On The Go

Our favorite healthy toddler snacks on the go

While you’ve probably got a snacking routine for your toddler down pat, you’ll still need a stable of healthy snacks that your little one can nosh on when you’re on the go. Because let’s face it: nothing’s worse than a famished 2-year-old while you’re running errands.

But what are the best healthy snacks for toddlers? For starters, you want them to be convenient and low in added sugars.

Here’s our roundup of the best healthy toddler snacks on the go.

Puffs/ dry cereal

Not only are dry cereals like Cheerios and unsweetened mini wheats fun to eat, they’re also full of nutrients and fibers your toddler needs. Our personal favorite are puffed whole grains, they’re super easy to pick up, dissolve in your little one’s mouth, and come in tons of fun colors.

Veggies

Yup—veggies like peas, cucumbers, steamed broccoli, cauliflower, and carrot sticks are still a great snack for those errand days. Just invest in some high-quality containers, and remember to store them in an insulated lunchbox or cooler.

Sandwich bites

One of the most filling, mess-free snacks you can give your toddler is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich cut up into little cubes; of course, you can use any nut butter (almond, cashew, etc.) you want, or even just make a classic ham and cheese sandwich.

Wanna make them extra cute? Cut the sandwiches out with star-shaped cookie cutters!

Waffles

Whole wheat waffles are one of the most fun snacks you can pack. Just toast them and cut up them into rectangles. Viola—waffle sticks. Make sure they’re whole wheat so you can guarantee your little one is getting the right amount of fiber, B vitamins, and protein.

Yogurt pouches/tubes

Yogurt pouches aren’t just sweet—they’re a delicious way for your toddler to get probiotics and vitamins B6 and B12. If you’re going on a long trip, freeze them in a lunch box so they’re nice and thawed out by snack time.

Squeezable applesauce

Applesauce is the perfect delivery system for toddlers to eat fruit: and it comes in convenient packaging. And, the best news is—some applesauce pouch brands are cleared to fly with the TSA!

Fruit

Of course, no list of healthy snack ideas for toddlers is complete without mentioning fruit—but which ones are best for a busy day away from home?

First off, bananas, clementines, mandarin oranges, and tangerines don’t need to be refrigerated. But you will need to peel them before you pack them! Freeze-dried and dried fruits like blueberries and mangoes are a great way to avoid a mess.

Now to put them all together: no matter what snack combo you pack, make sure you’ve got a healthy variety of fruit, veggies, proteins, and fats. Don’t forget, the American Heart Association recommends that babies under the age of 2 should only have a maximum sodium intake of 1,500 mg per day, so that means choosing the food options with the least amount of sodium.

Finally, to preserve your healthy snacks, invest in a set of durable containers to keep the food nice and fresh. And to carry all your snacks wherever you are, check out the Doona Essentials Bag. With quick-release connectors and smart compartments, you can have your little one’s snacks within reach no matter when hunger strikes!
