Summer Travel Guide For Families

Summer travel guide for families

The sunny season has always been a time for us to get out there and experience some warm-weather fun, as well as a chance to discover some new places with our little ones. And we know that after spending most of last year indoors and at home, your family is probably itching to start the adventure!

To help you make the most out of your next vacation, we’ve put together some summer family travel tips, so you can focus on what’s truly important — making some lasting memories with your little ones! Let’s take a look at what you need to consider as you start planning your next trip.

#1 Destination

The first step in any vacation is figuring out where to go! When it comes to summer travel, it's important to keep the weather in mind. Some places will be very hot, so you’ll want to plan accordingly depending on what you want to spend your vacation doing. There are so many great destinations in the United States, and all across the world, and each has their own sights, activities, and landmarks to offer! Be sure to create a budget and a time frame, as this can help inform your decision on where to go.

#2 Transportation

Once you’ve decided where to go, it’s time to figure out how to get there. Some destinations might require a flight, but some could give you the option of taking a road trip, or even a train ride. Your mode of transportation will depend on your budget, time frame, and your family. How do your littles do on flights? Would they like to stop and see things along a road trip? No matter how you get there, be sure you consider how you’ll keep your little ones safe, including bringing the right car seat. If you’re flying to your destination, an aircraft approved car seat, such as the Doona Infant Car Seat & Stroller, is a must.

#3 Packing

Of course, what to bring will vary based on where you are headed. Be sure to pack weather-appropriate clothing to keep you and your little ones comfortable. If you’ll be spending any time outdoors, it’s essential to bring sunscreen to keep your kids protected. When traveling with kids, make sure to pack things that help make your trip easier! This means lots of toys and games to keep them entertained, and the proper equipment you’ll need like car seats and strollers. A toddler trike such as the Liki Trike is the best of both worlds, acting as a stroller alternative, while providing fun and independence for your little one throughout your trip. Plus, it folds up small, making it super easy to bring on and off of public transportation, on an airplane, or in the car.

#4 Food

If you’re a parent, you know that when you travel with kids, it’s all about the snacks! Be sure to bring snacks for your journey, whether you’re flying or driving. Do some research ahead of time about restaurants in the area you’re going to, and try to stick to a schedule so your kids are eating at the same time each day as they usually do. This will help to prevent sugar crashes and keep everyone full and happy! If you’re headed somewhere exotic, try talking to your little ones about trying new foods, and even incentivize going outside their comfort zone with some yummy treats.

#5 Activities

There are so many different types of summer trips you could have: you could bounce from ride to ride at a theme park; soak up the sun on the beach; check out some historic landmarks near your home; or connect with the great outdoors on a camping trip! The possibilities are truly endless. Whatever you decide, it might be a good idea to create mini-schedules to keep your kids occupied, engaged and busy. Because no one in your family wants to deal with a bored child! When building the schedule, remember your little ones’ nap routines and energy levels, as well as the weather conditions. Don’t forget to take time to rest, and try not to fit too much in one day!

At Doona, we’re all about making parenting simple, by creating fun and functional products that you can take with you on all your adventures. And with summer all around us, we hope you use this time to explore. Happy travels!
